National Chocolate Day!

Ottawa got it's first sprinkle of snow last night, making it the perfect time for a nice hot cup of cocoa. The timing couldn't be better since it's also National Chocolate Day! There is actually some debate on whether that day is today or July 8th, but no argument here. I'll take both days!!!

Cocoa beans

Chocolate comes from the cacao (or cocoa) bean which is the dried and fermented seed of Theobroma cacao, from which cacao solids and cacao butter (the fat) can be extracted. Theobroma is latin for "Food of the Gods"! Many studies have concluded that Cacao contains an active compound that may account for the pleasurable sensations that occur after we eat it, which makes it one of the most body & soul nourishing plants on earth.

Cacao Pod - National Chocolate Day!

We all know and love eating chocolate and know about its health benefits. Cacao is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet. Dark Chocolate (the darker the better in my opinion) can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease. Some benefits of dark not sugar packed chocolate include:

  • being very nutritious (high in fiber, iron, magnesium,...)
  • source of antioxidants
  • lowers blood pressure
  • reduce heart disease risk
  • and more.... so go ahead and have that piece of chocolate, I recommend 85% - not the sugar filled milk chocolate kind!

Cacao is also good for your skin. Choolate is rich in flavonoids which target free radicals that target skin cells, it softens skin, improves elasticity and reduces wrinkles.

Kreyol Essence Haitian Black Castor Oil with Cocoa Essential Oil

Cacao Essential Oil (or Absolute) has the aroma of fine dark chocolate, and is infused in Kreyol Essence Haitian Black Castor OilThis oil has many uses, its a calming scalp massage that promotes circulation and hair growth. It also makes a great chocolate scented massage oil.

Birchrose + Co Cacao and Honey Face Mask

BIRCHROSE + CO Cacao & Honey Clay Mask is an antioxidant rich blend of clay & cacao to clear, hydrate and balance skin. It also contains cooling peppermint and manuka honey  to combat acne and aid in the structural rejuvenation of collagen.
